This watercolor and ink work depicts a scene from the Biblical story of Jesus's death and rebirth. Following his crucifixion, Jesus's body was buried in a cave or tomb. As described in the Gospel of John, Mary Magdalene visited the tomb to find two angels sitting "where the body of Jesus had lain". Upset at the body's absence, she began to weep, only to find Jesus standing beside her. Adapting the details of this scene, Blake places the two angels hovering above Jesus's body, probably portraying the moment just before his resurrection.

This is a work of pen, ink and watercolor on paper.  It is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, UK

The Angelus
Artist: Jean-François Millet
 1859    Painting

In this 19th century work by the French painter Jean-Francois Millet, a farming couple prays the Angelus at dusk.

The oil on canvas painting is located in Musée d'Orsay in Paris, and measures 21.9 × 26 inches.

The Angelus reminds us of the Annunciation when the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary with great news. The Angelus pays tribute to a crucial aspect of Mary’s role in the Incarnation, when it quotes from Luke’s Gospel “be it done to me according to thy word” (Lk 1:38).
