Jewish Prophets

Samuel was a key figure in keeping the Israelites' religious heritage and identity alive during Israel's defeat and occupation by the Philistines. He led the Israelites to defeat the philistines at Mizpah, and later anointed Saul as there first King. When Saul failed to follow God's instructions, Samuel anointed David as his successor.

Nathan was a court prophet in the time of King David. He was a trusted advisor of the king and exerted great influence. Nathan. also went on to support and advise David's son, Solomon.

Gad was a prophet and seer who served during the reign of David. He advised David during his years of flight from Saul, confronted him after the census of Israel, and directed him to build an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah.

A prophet from Shiloh who lived at the time of the Solomon and the divided kingdom that followed. Said to be from Shiloh, he was buried near the oak of Shiloh.

Jehu was a prophet of the early ninth century BC in the Northern Kingdom of Israel.

Shemaiah was a prophet of Judah during the reign of Rehoboam. He prevented Rehoboam from waging civil war against the northern tribes and later explained the invasion of Judah by Shishak of Egypt as divine discipline for the nation's unfaithfulness.

Elijah  was a prophet and a miracle worker who lived in the northern kingdom of Israel during the reign of King Ahab (9th century BC).

Joel prophesied during a devastating plague of locusts, warning all of the inhabitants of Israel of devastation that would sweep across the land in the days soon to come. He called for a season of fasting, mourning, and repentance. Joel likened the locusts to the greater judgement that would come on "the Day of the Lord" in the last days. (Joel 1:15, Joel 2:11)

He also gave a message of hope and prophesied of great blessings that would follow and the glories of the Messiah's kingdom.

Micaiah son of Imlah was a prophet during the reign of Ahab, king of Israel. He is remembered for refusing to alter the word of the Lord to please the king and for predicting Ahab's defeat and death at Ramoth-gilead.
