Samuel was a key figure in keeping the Israelites' religious heritage and identity alive during Israel's defeat and occupation by the Philistines. He led the Israelites to defeat the philistines at Mizpah, and later anointed Saul as there first King. When Saul failed to follow God's instructions, Samuel anointed David as his successor.
