 Bible Concepts

Angels

For many centuries, story-tellers and artists have conjured images of angelic beings. They are often depicted as beautiful, human-like creatures with wings and flowing white gowns. In order to know the truth about angels, however, we need to determine what the Bible says about them.

Atonement

Atonement is a central concept in the Bible and refers to the process by which the relationship between God and humanity is restored after being broken by sin. The word “atonement” is often explained as “at-one-ment,” meaning reconciliation or the restoration of unity between two parties who were separated (Romans 5:11). In biblical theology, atonement is the means by which sin is forgiven and the relationship between God and humanity is repaired.

Baptism of the Holy Spirit

The baptism of the Holy Spirit is a New Testament concept describing the work of Jesus Christ in giving the Holy Spirit to His people and bringing believers into the body of Christ. John the Baptist foretold that the Messiah would "baptize with the Holy Spirit," a promise dramatically fulfilled when the Spirit was poured out at Pentecost. The New Testament also connects Spirit baptism with the shared spiritual life of all Christians. Christian traditions differ over whether the term refers exclusively to the Spirit's work at conversion or may also describe a distinct experience of spiritual empowerment. Despite these differences, Scripture consistently presents the Holy Spirit as God's gift to those who belong to Christ.

Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit

Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is described by Jesus as a uniquely serious sin that "will not be forgiven." His warning came after religious leaders witnessed His works and attributed the power of the Holy Spirit to Satan. The passage is therefore not best understood as an accidental statement, an ordinary doubt, or a single moment of anger toward God. It reflects a deliberate and hardened rejection of the Spirit's testimony concerning Jesus Christ. The warning is serious, but those who fear that they have committed this sin and genuinely desire God's forgiveness demonstrate an attitude very different from the hardened opposition Jesus condemned.

Blessing and Curse

Blessing and curse are important biblical themes that describe the consequences of humanity's relationship with God. Throughout Scripture, God's blessing is associated with His favor, presence, provision, and peace, while His curse reflects the judgment and brokenness brought about by sin and rebellion. Under the Old Testament covenant, blessings and curses were often connected to Israel's obedience or disobedience. The New Testament reveals that Jesus Christ bore the curse of sin through His death on the cross so that those who trust Him might receive God's blessing and the promise of eternal life. Ultimately, the greatest blessing is fellowship with God, while the greatest curse is separation from Him.

Ceremonial Uncleanness

Ceremonial uncleanness in the Bible refers to a state of ritual impurity that affects a person’s fitness to enter sacred space or participate in certain acts of worship. It is important to distinguish ceremonial uncleanness from personal wickedness or moral guilt. In many biblical cases, a person became unclean through ordinary experiences of human life such as childbirth, menstruation, disease, bodily discharge, or contact with a dead body (Leviticus 11-15; Numbers 19:11-22). The laws of uncleanness taught Israel that God is holy and that access to His sanctuary was not casual or common (Leviticus 10:10; 15:31).

Covenants

A covenant in the Bible is a solemn and binding agreement initiated by God, through which He establishes a relationship with humanity, making promises and, at times, setting conditions for obedience. Scripture presents covenants as central to God’s dealings with mankind, forming a unifying thread that runs from Genesis to Revelation. A covenant is more than a contract; it is a sacred commitment in which God binds Himself to His people (Genesis 17:7; Jeremiah 31:33).

Demons

Rebellious, fallen angelic beings are known as "demons," and they seek the harm of humans in a myriad of ways. It is critical for every believer to understand that their existence and their evil mission is no fairy tale.

Essenes

The Essenes were a Jewish mystical sect somewhat resembling the Pharisees. They lived lives of ritual purity and separation. The group originated about 100 B.C., and disappeared from history after the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70.

Faith

Faith is one of the Bible's foundational concepts and is essential to a relationship with God. More than simply believing that God exists, biblical faith is placing complete trust in His character, His promises, and His plan of salvation. Throughout Scripture, God calls His people to trust Him even when they cannot see the outcome. Faith is the means by which believers receive God's grace, follow His guidance, and confidently rest in His faithfulness.

Forgiveness

Forgiveness is one of the Bible's greatest expressions of God's love and grace. Because every person has sinned against God, forgiveness is essential to restoring a right relationship with Him. Through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God offers complete forgiveness to all who repent and place their faith in Him. Having received such undeserved mercy, believers are also called to forgive others with the same compassion that God has shown them.

Fruit of the Spirit

The fruit of the Spirit describes the character produced in believers as the Holy Spirit transforms their lives. In Galatians 5:22-23, the Apostle Paul identifies this fruit as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Unlike spiritual gifts, which differ from one believer to another, these qualities are intended to develop in every Christian. They are not merely the result of human determination but the outward evidence of an inward life increasingly directed and empowered by the Holy Spirit.
