The Pastoral Life of Saint Geneviève
Artist: Pierre Puvis de Chavannes
1874-79
Painting
Puvis's murals for the French capital depicting the life of the patron saint of Paris were created over a five-year period. The work is bordered with leafy garlands that lend a decorative quality. Even more emphatically, near the ceiling of the Pantheon a riot of decorative elements, a great frieze of twenty-two haloed figures and a winged monster, hang above the mural.
This oil on canvas painting is in the Pantheon, Paris. France.
The Penitent Magdalen
Artist: Georges de La Tour
1640
Painting
This painting is rich in religious symbolism. The quiet atmosphere of the painting perfectly fits the subject, Mary Magdalen, who renounced the pleasures of the flesh for a life of penance and contemplation. She is shown with a mirror, symbol of vanity; a skull, emblem of mortality; and a candle that probably references her spiritual enlightenment.
This painting is oil on canvas, measures 52 1/2 x 40 1/4 in. (133.4 x 102.2 cm) and is housed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City
