Chartres Cathedral
 13th Century    Stained Glass

Located about 50 miles away from Paris is the Chartres Cathedral. Considered to be a “high point of French Gothic art” this 13th-century structure was built over the site of an older church that had burned down. One of the additions that was made to the church during its reconstruction was a series of 167 ornate stained glass windows, which have largely remained intact to this day.

Christ Among the Pharisees
Artist: Jacob Jordaens
 c. 1660-1670    Painting

 See Details

Painted by Jacob Jordaens in about 1660–70, this depiction of Christ among the Pharisees dates from the years just before the artist's conversion to Protestantism, when the differences between Catholic and Protestant doctrine must have been much on his mind. A rather atypical example of his religious production, this painting seems in fact to belie his Calvinist leanings.

This oil on canvas painting measures 55¼ x 83⅝ inches.
