The Angelus
Artist: Jean-François Millet
1859
Painting
In this 19th century work by the French painter Jean-Francois Millet, a farming couple prays the Angelus at dusk.
The oil on canvas painting is located in Musée d'Orsay in Paris, and measures 21.9 × 26 inches.
The Angelus reminds us of the Annunciation when the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary with great news. The Angelus pays tribute to a crucial aspect of Mary’s role in the Incarnation, when it quotes from Luke’s Gospel “be it done to me according to thy word” (Lk 1:38).
The Annunciation
Artist: Henry Ossawa Tanner
1898
Painting
In this painting, Tanner glowingly reveals the moment the angel Gabriel (rendered here in the form of a glowing column of light) visits Mary to tell her that she will carry the Christ child. The young woman is seated on a bed in the corner of her room wearing robes as if she has just awakened from slumber.
