The Importunate Neighbor
Artist: William Holman Hunt
1895
Painting
The Parable of the Friend at Night (also known as the Parable of the Friend at Midnight or of the Importunate Neighbour) is a parable of Jesus which appears in Luke 11:5–8. In it, a friend eventually agrees to help his neighbor due to his persistent demands rather than because they are friends, despite the late hour and the inconvenience of it.
This parable demonstrates the need to pray without giving up. It is similar to the Parable of the Unjust Judge and is depicted by several artists,
Hunt conveys a specific narrative; the title of the work already suggests the conflicting premise of intrusion and social pressure.
The title “The Importunate Neighbor” suggests a provocative state of discomfort, just as the role of the “neighbor” could be interpreted in the sense of not only physical, but also social and emotional intrusion. This effect is accentuated not only by the depiction of the characters, but also by the architectural environment that surrounds them. Hunt effectively captures the tension between private space and social expectations, which adds another layer of complexity to the work.
The Incredulity of Saint Thomas
Artist: Caravagio
1601-02
Painting
The Incredulity of Saint Thomas is one of the most copied and reproduced of all Caravaggio paintings. According to the gospel of St. John, Thomas (one of the twelve apostles) had missed Christ's appearance after the Resurrection and insisted that "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it." One week later, Christ appeared to Thomas instructing him: ”Reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.” Thomas was thus convinced (about the Resurrection) and proclaimed: “My Lord and my God!”, to which Jesus responded, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
this work is oil on canvas and is in the Sanssouci, Potsdam, Berlin, Germany
