Pontius Pilate is mentioned in the Bible as well as by Josephus, Tacitus and Philo as having been governor of Judea at the time of Christ. For a long time, however, there was no archeological evidence of his tenure there.

In 1961 excavations at Caesaria Maratima discovered a limestone block with a dedication to emperor Tiberius by "Pontius Pilate, Prefect of Judea." This provided the first archeological evidence of the man who sentenced Jesus to death.

"Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,"
Luke 3:1
