Ancient Synagogue
Discovered: Capernaum, Galilee

Many once believed that synagogues did not come into existence until after AD 70 with the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem. As a result, the scriptural statement that Jesus taught in synagogues was thought to be an anachronistic error.

However, ancient synagogues have since been discovered at Capernaum, Magdala and a number of other places in Palestine. Study by scholars has shown that synagogues were used by the Jews for civic gatherings as well as for reading of scripture and prayer.

"And Jesus went about in all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of disease and all manner of sickness among the people."
Matthew 4:23

Notable Finds

Much of what is described in Bible text is lost to history, requiring readers to assume the historicity of the scriptures.

However, many of the places and events described in the Old and New Testaments are periodically corroborated by archeological finds.

Some finds simply help us to better understand things from the ancient world. However, others provide important evidence as to the truth of scripture regarding things about which there had previously been skepticism.
