The Parable of the Wise and the Foolish Builders is a parable of Jesus from the Sermon on the Mount in the Gospel of Matthew (7:24–27) as well as the Sermon on the Plain in the Gospel of Luke (6:46–49). The parable illustrates the importance of building one's life on obedience to the teachings and example of Jesus.

This parable emphasizes the need to put Jesus' teachings into practice, and speaks of two types of people whose hearts are revealed by their actions. Matthew's version of the parable mentions rain and winds as well as floods. These forces are often interpreted ethically, as trials of life that can be resisted by a life founded on Christian doctrine. However, they can also be interpreted eschatologically.

By "rain" here, and "floods," and "winds," Jesus is metaphorically describing the calamities and afflictions that befall men, such as false accusations, plots, bereavements, deaths, and all the ills in our life that any one could mention. A person's soul does not give way to these, however, if it is founded on the rock.
