The Neo-Babylonian Empire played a decisive role in the history of Israel and the ancient Near East. Rising under Nabopolassar in the late seventh century BC, Babylon joined the Medes in destroying the Assyrian Empire and soon became the dominant power of Mesopotamia and the Levant. Nebuchadnezzar II’s victory over Egypt at Carchemish in 605 BC brought Syria and Palestine firmly within Babylon’s sphere, forcing smaller kingdoms such as Judah to submit or risk destruction.

For Judah, Babylon became the instrument of its greatest national catastrophe. After repeated rebellion, Nebuchadnezzar captured Jerusalem, deported King Jehoiachin and other leading citizens in 597 BC, and finally destroyed Jerusalem and Solomon’s Temple in 586 BC. The resulting Babylonian Exile profoundly shaped Jewish faith, identity, and expectations of restoration. Prophets including Jeremiah and Ezekiel interpreted these events within Israel’s covenant relationship with God, while Daniel is set largely within the Babylonian court. Babylon also subdued neighboring peoples and challenged Egyptian influence throughout the region. Its supremacy ended abruptly in 539 BC, when Cyrus the Great of Persia captured Babylon and inaugurated the period in which Jewish exiles were permitted to return to Jerusalem.
