Rufus Henry McDaniel (1850–1940) was ordained to the ministry in the Christian Church (1873). He penned this hymn in 1914 after the tragic loss of his youngest son Herschel in 1913. Composing the text of this uplifting and jubilant gospel hymn was his way of honoring the memory of his son. Composed in the first-person singular, McDaniel’s testimony becomes the personal salvation experience of all who sing this gospel hymn. The author sets the succinct hook phrase—“since Jesus came into my heart”—twice in each stanza.
The tune ws composed by an established gospel hymn composer and editor Charles H. Gabriel (1856–1932). Gabriel became one of the most popular gospel song composers during the urban crusades of the 1910s led by Billy Sunday (William Ashley Sunday, 1862–1935) and Homer Rodeheaver (1880–1955)

The Sinfonia was first performed on August 27, 1731, and was from JS Bach's 29th Sacred Cantata. ("We Thank You, God, We Thank You") The cantata is one of few sacred Bach cantatas opened by an orchestral sinfonia, and he composed it in Leipzig in 1731 for the new City Council's annual inauguration at St. Nicholas Church, one of the major churches of central Leipzig, Germany. For the inauguration event, Bach could count on the entire council (his employer) listening, probably also civil servants and representatives of the Elector's administration for the region. The musicologist Klaus Hofmann notes: "It was an opportunity for Bach to show how sacred music was flourishing under his direction and to present himself as a composer." Two hundred years later, Marcel Dupré took the orchestral score of the Sinfonia and arranged it into a virtuosic organ solo. In many ways, Dupré may be viewed as a Paganini of the organ. Being a virtuoso of the highest order, he contributed extensively to the development of technique, and like Paganini, Dupré's music is largely unknown to musicians other than those who play the instrument for which the music was written. Dupré's arrangement of Bach's Sinfonia displays virtuosity with a high degree of musical integrity. Regarding this performance: The pipe organ at Balboa Park is the largest outdoor pipe organ in the world.
