Christian music was originally written for performance in church and was set to words expressing ideas of a sacred nature. There is a reference to St. Paul encouraging the Ephesians and Colossians to use psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. According to the historian Socrates of Constantinople, the introduction of music into Christian worship was due to Ignatius of Antioch, who in a vision had seen the angels singing in alternate choirs.

From Gregorian chants to Mass a cappella, carols and Christian hymnody, Christian music has come to include a range of styles often influenced by popular music. Many of the forms incorporate country styles as well as modern, black gospel.

 Is the Music Actually Christian?

One must be careful and not assume that all music labeled "Christian"conveys Godly content. Much of modern, so-called Christian music is actually written and performed by artists who are not themselves believers. While we present a broad collection of music described as Christian on this site, we encourage all to prayerfully examine what each piece conveys.
