"Nearer, My God, to Thee" is a 19th-century Christian hymn by Sarah Flower Adams, which retells the story of Jacob's dream. Genesis 28:11–12 can be translated as follows: "So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it..."
The hymn is well known, among other uses, as the alleged last song the band on RMS Titanic played before the ship sank and as the song sung by the crew and passengers of the SS Valencia as it sank off the Canadian coast in 1906.
The verse was written by the English poet and Unitarian hymn writer Sarah Flower Adams in Essex, England, in 1841. It was first set to music by Adams's sister, the composer Eliza Flower.

LYRICS:
Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!
E'en though it be a cross that raiseth me;
Still all my song shall be nearer, my God, to Thee,

Chorus: Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!

Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down,
Darkness be over me, my rest a stone;
Yet in my dreams I'd be nearer, my God, to Thee,

Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!

There let the way appear steps unto heav'n;
All that Thou sendest me in mercy giv'n;
Angels to beckon me nearer, my God, to Thee,

Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!

Then with my waking thoughts bright with Thy praise,
Out of my stony griefs Bethel I'll raise;
So by my woes to be nearer, my God, to Thee,

Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!

Or if on joyful wing, cleaving the sky,
Sun, moon, and stars forgot, upwards I fly,
Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee,

Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!

A sixth verse was later added to the hymn by Edward Henry Bickersteth Jr. as follows:[1]

There in my Father's home, safe and at rest,
There in my Saviour's love, perfectly blest;
Age after age to be, nearer my God to Thee,

Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!

In the United Kingdom, the hymn is usually associated with the 1861 hymn tune "Horbury" by John Bacchus Dykes, named for a village near Wakefield, England, where Dykes had found "peace and comfort". In the rest of the world, the hymn is usually sung to the 1856 tune "Bethany" by Lowell Mason

This hymn is about the joy and comfort found in being close to God. The first stanza introduces the theme of the hymn, with the repeated phrase “Nearer, my God, to thee.” The second through fourth stanzas are based on the story of Jacob and the ladder to heaven, found in Genesis 28:10-22. God's close connection to Jacob in this story is seen as a way of relief from the darkness (st. 2) and “stony griefs” (st. 4) of his human journey. The last stanza looks forward to the time when we will come to stand before God in eternal song.

LYRICS:
You tore the veil
So my eyes could see
Your open arms
Right in front of me
Lord I feel blind
Make this darkness flee
You know exactly
What I need

Help me God I do believe
But I feel lost and it's killing me
I need You right now
God please answer me
I know You're here but it's hard to see
I need You right now

Trying myself
To figure it out
It's like standing on sand
And swimming in doubt
I know I'm not alone
If all of this time
You've been waiting
All of this time
For me to say it
Now I'm calling out

Help me God I do believe
But I feel lost and it's killing me
I need You right now
God please answer me
I know You're here but it's hard to see
I need You right now

You tore the veil
So my eyes could see
Your open arms
Right in front of me
Lord I feel blind
Make this darkness flee
You know exactly
What I need
It's You
It's You
It's You

Help me God I do believe
But I feel lost and it's killing me
I need You right now
God please answer me
I know You're here but it's hard to see
I need You right now
You tore the veil
So my eyes could see
Your open arms
Right in front of me

You tore the veil
So my eyes could see
Your open arms
Right in front of me

LYRICS:
Well everybody's got a story to tell
And everybody's got a wound to be healed
I wanna believe there's beauty here
'Cause oh, I get so tired of holding on
I can't let go, I can't move on
I wanna believe there's meaning here

[Chorus]
How many times have You heard me cry out, "God, please take this"?
How many times have You given me strength to just keep breathing?
Oh, I need You
God, I need You now

[Verse 2]
Standing on a road I didn't plan
Wondering how I got to where I am
I'm trying to hear that still small voice
I'm trying to hear above the noise

[Chorus]
How many times have You heard me cry out, "God, please take this"?
How many times have You given me strength to just keep breathing?
Oh, I need You
God, I need You now

[Bridge]
Oh, I walk, oh, I walk through the shadows
And I, I am so afraid
Please stay, please stay right beside me
With every single step I take

[Chorus]
How many times have You heard me cry out?
And how many times have You given me strength?
How many times have You heard me cry out, "God, please take this"?
How many times have You given me strength to just keep breathing?
Oh, I need You
God, I need You now
I need You now
Oh, I need You
God, I need You now

[Outro]
I need You now
I need You now

LYRICS:
The world begins
With newborn skin
We are right now
You're a needle girl
In a haystack world
We are right now

You breathe it in
The highs and lows
We call it living

In this needle and haystack life
I found miracles there in your eyes
It's no accident we're here tonight
We are once in a lifetime

Don't let go
Don't give up hope
All is forgiven
You breathe it in
You breathe it in
We call it living

In this needle and haystack life
I found miracles there in your eyes
It's no accident we're here tonight
We are once in a lifetime

All is not lost
All is not lost
Become who you are
It happens once in a lifetime

In this needle and haystack life
I found miracles there in your eyes
It's no accident we're here tonight
We are once in a lifetime alive
We are once in a lifetime

In this needle and haystack life
We are once in a lifetime

LYRICS:
There's so many voices out there right now
Telling you what they feel you need
I found the answer's really simple
And it's been there the entire time

I need peace
I need grace
I need strength for one more day
I need patience for this race
I need Jesus

I need truth that will not change
I need grace when I'm the one to blame
In a crowded room
Someone who knows my name
I need Jesus

I don't need another love song
For the radio to play
I'm at the end of myself
When I talk to myself
I have nothing left to hear me say

I don't need another plan
'Cause when they fail
I have to plan again
I need the one that takes me as I am
I need Jesus

I don't need another love song
For the radio to play
I'm at the end of myself
When I talk to myself
I have nothing left to hear me say

I need love that will not lie
A love that chases and says you're mine
A love that promised for you I'll die
I need Jesus (I need Jesus)

Help me say oh
How beautiful to know
I trust you won't let go
You live to catch each dream that falls

Say oh
How could my heart say no?
When You live to make me Your own
So I answer when You call

Keep your trends, they will change
Material things, they quickly fade
Keep your empty prayers, I'm ok
I've got Jesus (woah)
I've got Jesus (Yes)
I've got Jesus (Jesus)
Give me Jesus

LYRICS:
Hanging by a thread
From the tree
Of this life
I've been spinning
Round and round and round
Inside my flesh cocoon
An old beat up Pinto
Might be what I drive for now
But I'll be driving a Cadillac soon

Cause you know one day I will fly
To my mansion in the sky
And I'll have no regrets
When I leave this place
For good
When I say my last farewell
Oh, please don't forget to tell them
That I'm not really dead
I'm just changing neighborhoods

Living in this place
That is only temporary
I said that this old world
Is in the process of slipping away
Though I have such a future
I've got to be wary
That my bright tomorrow doesn't blind me
To what God has for me today

Cause you know one day I will fly
To my mansion in the sky
And I'll have no regrets
When I leave this place
For good
When I say my last farewell
Oh, please don't forget to tell them
That I'm not really dead
I'm just changing neighborhoods

Cause you know one day I will fly
To my mansion in the sky
And I'll have no regrets
When I leave this place
For good
When I say my last farewell
Oh, please don't forget to tell them
That I'm not really dead
I'm just changing neighborhoods

LYRICS:
I heard your name today
I heard you made the old mistake again
And it hit me hard
I really thought this time
I thought that you would somehow find a way
To meet the faith I had in you
And I confess I almost lost that faith today
But I was wrong, so wrong...

(Chorus)
'Cause He will never give up on you
And neither will I, neither will I
Know that we still believe in you
And if you will try, if you will try again
He will never give up on you
And neither will I, neither will I, my friend

I heard your name today
I heard it from a wiser voice inside
And it broke my heart
I got down on my knees
Reminded that the Father of your soul
Has been the One to care the most
And He is there to lift you up and hold you close
His love is strong, so strong...

The English translation:
Knowing no man, the Virgin mother
bore, without pain,
the Saviour of the world.
Him, the king of angels,
only the Virgin suckled,
breasts filled by heaven.
