Questions & Objections

The Fine-Tuned Universe • 6 questions and objections
A Visit With Jesus

Important objections deserve to be examined rather than avoided. The questions below identify challenges raised about the evidence and the design inference. Select one to examine the objection, why it matters, the response offered, the question that remains, and the research sources used.

Questions Considered

Question 1

Of Course We Observe a Life-Permitting Universe

We should not be surprised to observe a universe compatible with life. If the universe were incapable of producing observers, no one would be here to observe it.

This is often called an anthropic or observer-selection effect.

Question 2

Could There Be Many Universes?

Perhaps our universe is only one member of an enormous collection of universes having different physical conditions.

If enough universes exist with sufficiently varied constants and conditions, some might naturally fall within life-permitting ranges. Observers would then find themselves in one of those universes.

Question 3

How Do We Know Fine-Tuning Is Improbable?

Fine-tuning arguments sometimes describe life-permitting constants as extraordinarily improbable. But calculating a probability requires more than identifying a narrow range of values. We also need some justified way of assigning probabilities to the possible values.

Question 4

What If the Constants Cannot Really Vary Independently?

Fine-tuning examples are sometimes presented by changing one physical parameter while holding everything else fixed. But a deeper physical theory might connect parameters that presently appear independent.

Changing one quantity might therefore require other quantities to change with it.

Question 5

Are We Assuming Life Must Be Like Us?

Fine-tuning arguments often ask whether different physical conditions would permit life like the life we know. But perhaps radically different forms of life or complex organization could exist under conditions very different from ours.

Question 6

Could Future Physics Explain the Fine-Tuning?

Constants that presently appear arbitrary may eventually be derived from a deeper theory. What looks like a freely adjustable number today might turn out to be fixed by more fundamental physics.
