Historical Context

Giotto painted the Lamentation in the Arena (Scrovegni) Chapel at Padua around 1304-1306, as part of a broad fresco cycle recounting the lives of Mary and Jesus. Four AVWJ images show the work and details.

Depiction Analysis

The dead Christ lies in the arms of mourners while Mary bends close to his face. Other figures express grief through their gestures, and angels lament above. The sloping rocky landscape directs attention toward Jesus.

Theological Significance

The scene asks viewers to contemplate the reality of Jesus' death and the grief of those who loved him, while understanding the event within the hope of redemption.

Historical Significance

Giotto gave the sacred story a new weight of bodily presence, space, and recognizable human emotion, anticipating later Renaissance developments.

Influence

The Lamentation became an enduring model for representing the Passion as an event of profound human sorrow.
