The monumental Last Judgment portal of Saint-Lazare Cathedral in Autun, France, was carved in the twelfth century, traditionally associated with the sculptor Gislebertus. The great figure of Christ occupies the center of a sculptural program addressed to those entering the church.
Christ appears enthroned within an elongated mandorla, separating the blessed from the condemned. His enlarged scale and commanding posture make him the focus of the composition, while smaller figures convey the drama of judgment.
The image proclaims the risen Christ as judge of humanity and presents human destiny as a matter of lasting spiritual consequence.
Autun is a major Romanesque example of the Last Judgment presented at a church entrance, where architecture and sculpture worked together to teach and admonish.
Its expressive figures and dramatic contrasts have become central examples in the study of Romanesque religious sculpture.
