Jesus was arrested, tried, and crucified under the Roman governor Pontius Pilate. He died on the cross for the sins of the world (Luke 23:33; John 19:30).
"Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." (Luke 23:34)

"Surely this was a righteous man." (Luke 23:47)
After Jesus was arrested, He was taken before the high priest and then to the Roman governor Pontius Pilate. Although Pilate found no crime deserving death, the crowd demanded that Jesus be crucified. Jesus was beaten, mocked, and forced to carry His cross to the place called Golgotha.
Jesus was nailed to the cross between two criminals. While on the cross, He prayed for those who crucified Him and spoke to His followers who were nearby. After several hours, Jesus died, and the sky became dark and the curtain of the temple was torn in two.
Jesus was taken down from the cross and placed in a tomb that belonged to Joseph of Arimathea. A large stone was rolled in front of the tomb, and guards were placed there.

There are many dozens of bible narratives that have become deeply engrained in western culture. Most are best understood when the culture and customs that surround them are known.
Also, the study of history and archeology often provide us with a foundation for a more complete picture of people and events found within bible narratives.
Evidence continues to be discovered in architectural inscriptions, artwork and other artifacts that encourage us to believe in the historicity of the bible.
