Jesus describes angels gathering His elect from the extremities of the earth and heaven, accompanied in Matthew by the sound of a great trumpet.
Trumpets had numerous functions in biblical Israel. They could summon the community, signal movement, sound an alarm, accompany worship, and mark sacred occasions. Prophetic texts also connect trumpet imagery with the day of the Lord and with the gathering of God's scattered people.
Isaiah 27:13, for example, speaks of a great trumpet being sounded as scattered Israelites return to worship the Lord at Jerusalem. Jesus' language therefore draws upon a recognizable biblical vocabulary of summons and restoration.
The trumpet is more than dramatic decoration. Against its scriptural background, it communicates a divine summons and the gathering of God's people. The image connects Jesus' teaching about the Son of Man with older biblical promises of restoration.
