Introduction

Luke identifies the destination of two disciples as a village called Emmaus, about sixty stadia from Jerusalem. The stadion is an ancient distance measurement unfamiliar to most modern readers.

Converting it approximately helps recover the scale of the journey.

Historical and Cultural Context

A Greek stadion varied somewhat by place and period but was roughly 185 meters. Sixty stadia therefore represents about eleven kilometers, or approximately seven miles. That is a substantial walk but entirely feasible within a day.

The exact identification of Luke's Emmaus remains debated because several ancient sites have been proposed and manuscript traditions include a different distance in some witnesses. The sixty-stadia reading supports a location relatively near Jerusalem.

Why It Matters

The distance makes the narrative's urgency visible. The disciples have already walked for hours when they urge the stranger to stay because evening is approaching.

After recognizing Jesus, however, they immediately undertake the journey back to Jerusalem. Their willingness to reverse a seven-mile walk dramatizes how completely the encounter changes their state of mind.
