Balak
biblical character (Book of Numbers)
Balak son of Zippor was king of Moab who hired Balaam to curse Israel as the Israelites approached the Promised Land.
Biography
Alarmed by Israel's victories and numbers, Balak allied with Midianite elders and sent messengers to Balaam. He repeatedly took Balaam to vantage points and prepared sacrifices in hopes that a curse could be pronounced. Each attempt failed because God put words of blessing in Balaam's mouth. Balak became increasingly frustrated and finally dismissed him. The following chapter records Israel's sin with Moabite women and Baal of Peor, while later biblical reflection links Balaam with counsel behind that snare.
Biblical Significance
Balak represents futile political and religious opposition to God's blessing of Israel. His efforts could not make divine promise subject to manipulation or divination.
