rebellious son of King David
Absalom was a handsome and charismatic son of David who avenged his sister Tamar, later rebelled against his father, and died during the resulting civil war.
Biography
Absalom was the son of David and Maacah. After his half-brother Amnon raped Absalom's sister Tamar, Absalom waited two years and arranged Amnon's killing, then fled. Eventually restored to Jerusalem, he cultivated public support by presenting himself as an accessible champion of justice. He declared himself king at Hebron, forcing David to flee Jerusalem. Absalom entered the capital and followed counsel that publicly demonstrated his break with his father. In the battle in the forest of Ephraim, his hair or head became caught in a tree while his mule passed beneath him. Although David had ordered that Absalom be spared, Joab killed him. David responded with the anguished lament, 'O my son Absalom.'
Biblical Significance
Absalom's story shows the destructive consequences of unresolved injustice, family sin, ambition, and rebellion within David's house. It also reveals David's profound grief as a father even for the son who sought his throne and life.
