Cuttings [in The Flesh]

Cuttings in the flesh were self-inflicted wounds made in idolatrous worship, especially to seek favor from pagan gods. Israel was expressly forbidden to imitate this practice.
Biblical Usage
The prophets of Baal cut themselves in their appeal to their god (1 Kings 18:28). The law forbade Israel to cut the flesh or mark the body for the dead.
