Separation of the Earth from the Waters
Artist: Michelangelo- Sistine Chapel
1511
The separation of land and water is one of the nine central Genesis scenes Michelangelo painted between 1508 and 1512. It belongs to the group depicting the formation of the world. As in the other creation panels, the artist places the action of God at the center of the story.
Genesis 1:9–10 describes the waters gathering together so that dry land appears. God names the land Earth and the gathered waters Seas, and declares the result good. The account portrays the world as ordered and purposeful rather than the product of competing divine powers.
The Creator moves across an open expanse with commanding gestures. Michelangelo gives little space to the emerging landscape, emphasizing instead the force of the divine act. The broad movement of the figure makes an immense event readable from far below.
