Tu BiShvat

Celebrated Today

A Visit With Jesus

Modern Tu BiShvat is often celebrated by eating fruit, especially fruits associated with the land of Israel.

Some Jewish communities hold a Tu BiShvat seder. This custom developed from Jewish mystical traditions. The meal may include different kinds of fruits and nuts, readings and cups of wine or grape juice.

Figs, dates, grapes, pomegranates and olives are especially appropriate because they belong to the produce praised in Deuteronomy.

Tree planting also became a popular modern custom, particularly in connection with the land of Israel.

Many Jewish communities now use Tu BiShvat as an opportunity to discuss care for creation. Activities may focus on trees, conservation and responsible use of the natural world.

There is no single form of observance followed by all Jewish communities. Tu BiShvat remains a relatively minor festival with considerable freedom in the way it is celebrated.
