Jesus describes a wealthy landowner whose fields produce so abundantly that his existing storage is insufficient. He decides to tear down his barns and build larger ones.

Agricultural wealth depended not only upon producing crops but also upon storing them after harvest. Grain and other produce required protected storage against weather, animals, theft, and spoilage. Expanded storage therefore represented the preservation and accumulation of agricultural surplus.
The storage problem makes the landowner's prosperity tangible. His harvest has exceeded his existing capacity, and his response is to increase the infrastructure for retaining the surplus.
