Counting the Cost: Builder and King

Historical/Cultural Context •  Luke
A Visit With Jesus
Jesus illustrates deliberate discipleship with a builder estimating the cost of a tower and a king assessing whether his army can face a stronger force.
Historical/Cultural Context

Introduction

Jesus gives two parallel illustrations of advance calculation. A person intending to build a tower first determines whether he has sufficient resources to finish it. A king facing an army of twenty thousand considers whether his own force of ten thousand can meet the threat or whether he should seek terms of peace.

Historical and Cultural Context

Construction required planning, materials, labor, and sufficient resources to complete a project. Warfare likewise required rulers to assess manpower and other practical conditions before committing to battle. Beginning either undertaking without considering the likely outcome could bring serious consequences.

Why It Matters

Both illustrations depend upon the same practical wisdom: serious commitments should be considered before they are undertaken. The everyday examples give concrete force to Jesus' warning that discipleship involves costs that should not be ignored.
