Social Context

Introduction

In Jesus' parable of the great banquet, invited guests begin to make excuses when the meal is ready. One has purchased land, another has bought five yoke of oxen and wants to examine them, and another says that he has married a wife and therefore cannot come.

Historical and Cultural Context

Land, working animals, and marriage represented substantial concerns within ancient economic and household life. Five yoke of oxen represented significant agricultural resources, while marriage created new household responsibilities and obligations.

Why It Matters

The excuses sound substantial because they invoke recognizable economic and family concerns. That cultural plausibility sharpens the parable: ordinary priorities become reasons for rejecting an invitation that has already been extended.
