Jesus in Context

Hospitality Without Expecting Repayment

Social Convention •  Luke
A Visit With Jesus
Jesus challenges the normal reciprocity of social meals by telling His host to invite people who cannot repay the invitation.
Social Convention

Introduction

Jesus tells His host that when giving a meal he should not restrict his invitations to friends, relatives, and wealthy neighbors who can return the favor. Instead, He names the poor, the maimed, the lame, and the blind—people unable to repay the hospitality in the ordinary social manner.

Historical and Cultural Context

Meals helped create and maintain social relationships. Invitations could operate within networks of reciprocity in which hospitality received created an expectation of hospitality returned. Jesus deliberately reverses that pattern by emphasizing guests who cannot repay their host.

Why It Matters

The social background makes Jesus' teaching more pointed. His instruction is not simply about constructing a guest list; it challenges hospitality practiced primarily as an exchange of social obligation, advantage, or status.
