Agriculture

Introduction

In the parable of the barren fig tree, a landowner comes seeking fruit from a fig tree planted in his vineyard. After finding none for three years, he orders that it be cut down, but the vineyard keeper asks for another year in which to cultivate and fertilize it.

Historical and Cultural Context

Fig trees were valuable cultivated trees, and an unproductive tree occupied ground that could otherwise support productive growth. The owner's repeated search for fruit and the gardener's request for additional time therefore draw upon ordinary agricultural expectations familiar to Jesus' hearers.

Why It Matters

The agricultural setting gives force to the parable's combination of judgment and patience. The tree has been given time to produce fruit, yet the gardener requests a further opportunity before it is removed.
