Historical/Cultural Context

Introduction

While Pilate is sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sends him an urgent message: 'Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.' Matthew alone among the four Gospels records this interruption of Jesus' trial.

Historical and Cultural Context

Dreams were widely regarded in the ancient Mediterranean world as potentially meaningful communications or warnings. Matthew places the dream while Pilate is actively judging Jesus, so the message reaches him at the moment when he must decide how to respond to the case before him.

Why It Matters

The episode adds another testimony concerning Jesus during the trial narrative. Pilate receives a warning from within his own household describing Jesus as a righteous or innocent man even as pressure surrounding the trial continues to build.
