Greater Works Because I Go to the Father

Discipleship •  John
A Visit With Jesus
Jesus promises that those who believe in Him will continue His works and do greater works because He is going to the Father.
Discipleship

Introduction

Jesus tells His disciples that whoever believes in Him will do the works that He does and will do 'greater works than these.' He grounds this promise in His approaching departure: 'because I go unto my Father.'

Historical and Cultural Context

The promise occurs within Jesus' Farewell Discourse as He prepares the disciples for His departure. Rather than presenting His departure as the end of His work, Jesus describes a continuing mission carried forward through those who believe in Him.

The statement about 'greater works' is therefore connected directly to Jesus' going to the Father. The disciples' future ministry belongs to the period that follows His earthly ministry rather than representing an independent undertaking separated from Him.

Why It Matters

Jesus' departure does not mean that His work among people simply stops. The passage prepares the disciples to understand that their future mission will continue what Jesus has begun and that this expanded work is connected with His going to the Father.
