A Visit With Jesus
Jesus describes the Spirit as glorifying Him by receiving what belongs to Him and declaring it to the disciples.
Discipleship

Introduction

Jesus says that the Spirit will glorify Him because the Spirit will take what belongs to Jesus and declare it to the disciples. Jesus then explains the relationship behind this statement: 'All things that the Father hath are mine.' For this reason, He says, the Spirit takes what is His and declares it to them.

Historical and Cultural Context

The sequence of Jesus' statements is important. The Spirit glorifies Jesus; the Spirit receives what belongs to Jesus; everything belonging to the Father also belongs to Jesus; and the Spirit declares these things to the disciples.

The language of receiving, declaring, and glorifying presents the Spirit's ministry as centered upon Jesus rather than as an independent message. The Father, Son, and Spirit are described in closely connected terms within the same short passage.

Why It Matters

This passage helps define the purpose of the Spirit's promised teaching ministry. The Spirit does not draw attention away from Jesus but glorifies Him. Jesus grounds that ministry in His own relationship with the Father, saying that all that the Father has is His and that the Spirit communicates what belongs to Him.
