The Spirit Will Guide You Into All Truth

Discipleship •  John
A Visit With Jesus
Jesus promises that the coming Spirit of Truth will guide the disciples, speak what He hears, and declare what is to come.
Discipleship

Introduction

Jesus again speaks of the coming 'Spirit of Truth.' Because the disciples cannot presently bear everything Jesus has yet to teach them, He promises that the Spirit will guide them into all truth. The Spirit will not speak independently, but will speak what He hears and will declare to the disciples the things to come.

Historical and Cultural Context

The title 'Spirit of Truth' has already appeared in Jesus' Farewell Discourse. Here Jesus develops the Spirit's teaching role in direct response to the disciples' present inability to receive everything He has to say.

The language of hearing and speaking emphasizes that the Spirit's message is not portrayed as independent or self-originating. The Spirit communicates what He hears. Jesus also says that the Spirit will declare 'things to come,' extending the promise beyond the disciples' immediate understanding of the present moment.

Why It Matters

The promise explains how Jesus' instruction of His disciples continues even though His earthly departure is approaching. Their present limitations will not leave them without guidance. The Spirit of Truth will lead them into the truth they are not yet prepared to receive and will faithfully communicate what He hears.
