Discipleship

Introduction

During the Farewell Discourse, Jesus tells His disciples, 'I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.' Their instruction is therefore not presented as complete at this moment. Jesus recognizes a present limitation in their ability to receive what remains to be taught.

Historical and Cultural Context

The disciples have already received extensive teaching from Jesus, yet the events toward which the Gospel is moving have not yet taken place. Their inability to 'bear' further teaching is more than a simple lack of information. They are approaching experiences that will profoundly affect how they understand Jesus' words and mission.

Jesus immediately follows this statement with His promise concerning the Spirit of Truth, connecting the disciples' present limitation with the Spirit's future work among them.

Why It Matters

The statement provides the setting for Jesus' teaching about the Spirit in the verses that follow. The disciples are not expected to comprehend everything at once. Jesus acknowledges their present limitations while promising continuing divine guidance after His departure.
