Large ancient households could include servants with very different levels of responsibility. A trusted steward or household manager might supervise other servants, administer supplies, distribute provisions, and conduct affairs on behalf of an absent master.
Such authority was delegated rather than independent. The steward possessed real responsibility but remained accountable to the household owner and could be evaluated when the owner returned.
The social institution gives force to Jesus' teaching about watchfulness. Readiness is not portrayed merely as waiting or calculating when the master will return. The faithful servant is ready precisely because he continues performing the work entrusted to him.
