Agriculture employed a large portion of the population, so working alongside another person in a field was an unremarkable scene. Grain preparation was likewise a daily household necessity. Small hand mills commonly required repetitive labor, and women could work together grinding grain into flour.
These are intentionally ordinary settings. Jesus does not locate the decisive moment only in a Temple, battlefield, or royal court. It interrupts familiar work being performed by people side by side.
The social background makes the sayings more immediate. People engaged in apparently identical activities can face a sudden separation. The examples continue the theme introduced by Noah: ordinary life proceeds until a decisive event arrives unexpectedly.
