Peter draws the net to land, and John describes it as full of large fish: one hundred fifty-three in all. Although the catch is exceptionally large, the net remains intact.

Commercial fishermen had practical reasons to know the size of a catch, including division, transport, and sale, so an exact count need not itself require a symbolic explanation. The number 153 has nevertheless generated many interpretations throughout Christian history, including mathematical and allegorical proposals.
John gives no explanation assigning symbolic meaning to the number. What he explicitly emphasizes is both the abundance of the catch and the surprising fact that the heavily loaded net was not torn.
Distinguishing the text from later speculation allows the vivid detail to retain its force. The narrative presents a remembered, countable abundance. Symbolic readings may be discussed as later interpretations, but they should not be presented as though John supplied their key.
