Introduction

Peter responds to the recognition of Jesus by casting himself into the sea. The others remain with the boat, dragging the net of fish toward land.

Historical and Cultural Context

John says that the boat was about two hundred cubits from land. Depending on the cubit used, this is roughly ninety meters or about one hundred yards. The distance is close enough for communication with shore and for Peter to make his own way in while the crew handles the boat and catch.

The text does not specify whether Peter swam the entire distance, waded part of it, or encountered shallower water near shore.

Why It Matters

The measured distance gives the account a concrete physical setting. Peter's action is impulsive but understandable: he leaves the slower work of bringing in the catch to the others in order to reach Jesus immediately.
