The Inference to Intelligent Design • 6 questions and objections
A Visit With Jesus

Important objections deserve to be examined rather than avoided. The questions below identify challenges raised about the evidence and the design inference. Select one to examine the objection, why it matters, the response offered, the question that remains, and the research sources used.

Questions Considered

Question 1

Is Intelligent Design Just an Argument from Ignorance?

A common criticism says that Intelligent Design reasons from what science does not yet know. If the origin of a biological system is unexplained, design is proposed to fill the gap.

History gives good reason for caution. Many phenomena once poorly understood later received natural explanations.

Question 2

Does Evolution Remove the Need for Design?

Evolutionary biology explains adaptation, diversification, speciation, gene duplication, regulatory change, and other forms of biological innovation. If natural mechanisms can produce apparently designed organisms, why introduce intelligence?

Question 3

Can Natural Processes Produce Apparent Design?

Nature can produce striking order without intelligence. Crystals form regular patterns. Snowflakes develop intricate structures. Natural selection can preserve useful variations and gradually produce adaptations that appear purposeful.

Question 4

Is Intelligent Design Testable?

Critics argue that Intelligent Design does not provide a testable scientific explanation because an unspecified designer could potentially produce almost any outcome. If every possible observation can be reconciled with design, what evidence could count against it?

Question 5

Who Designed the Designer?

If complex or information-rich things require explanation, critics ask why the proposed Designer does not also require a designer. Appealing to intelligence may seem to move the explanatory problem back one step rather than solve it.

Question 6

Even If There Is Design, Why Think the Designer Is God?

Even if some features of nature are best explained by intelligence, the inference does not by itself identify that intelligence as the God of Christianity. A design inference alone does not establish the Bible, the Trinity, the Incarnation, or the Resurrection.
