Intelligent Design proposes that biological information and the systems that interpret it may be better explained by purposeful intelligent causation.
The argument focuses not merely upon molecular complexity but upon sequence-specific information that performs functions within an integrated system.
DNA and RNA sequences participate in transcription, recognition, coding, translation, regulation, and molecular construction. The design proposal asks whether the origin of this coordinated information-processing arrangement is reasonably explained by intelligent causation.
Intelligence is a known cause capable of producing coded relationships, functional sequences, stored instructions, and systems in which information directs construction.
The design explanation also considers the biological information system as a whole rather than treating every component independently.
From this perspective, the coordinated relationships among genetic sequences, molecular adaptors, amino acids, proteins, and cellular functions are potentially significant evidence.
Similarity to human information systems does not by itself demonstrate intelligent causation.
A design inference must be considered alongside natural explanations involving chemical affinity, self-organization, selection, coevolution, and historical contingency.
It must also avoid treating present gaps in scientific knowledge as though ignorance itself were positive evidence for design.
Can chemical processes produce the kind and quantity of functional sequence information required by biological systems?
Can coding relationships emerge and become integrated with translation without intelligent direction?
How should we distinguish genuine evidence of purpose from complexity produced by natural processes?
What observations would favor purposeful design over competing natural explanations?
This explanation directly represents the Intelligent Design interpretation being investigated.
Its case is strongest when it rests upon positive characteristics of the system: functional sequence information, coding relationships, molecular recognition, coordinated translation, and integrated information processing.
The argument should therefore not be: science does not presently know every historical step, therefore design.
Rather, the question is whether the kind of information-rich and functionally coordinated organization observed in living systems is reasonably explained by intelligent causation when compared with the alternatives.
For the Christian, purposeful biological information fits naturally within the biblical understanding that living things ultimately owe their existence to a Creator. Intelligent Design asks the narrower evidential question of whether characteristics observed in life reasonably point toward purpose.
