Intelligent Design offers a different explanation for the origin of the first living system.
Design advocates point especially to biological information and functional organization. Living systems do not merely contain complex molecules. They use particular molecular arrangements to store information, perform functions, regulate reactions, obtain energy, reproduce, and maintain an organized system.
From this perspective, the central question is whether undirected chemical processes are sufficient to account for the origin of such functionally organized information and its integration into the first living system.
Intelligent Design advocates argue that intelligent agents are known to produce information-rich, functionally organized systems and therefore propose intelligent causation as an explanation for the origin of biological information and organization.
This is an inference from the observed properties of living systems and from what is known about causes capable of producing functionally specified information. It is not the conclusion of mainstream origin-of-life research, and it must be evaluated alongside proposed natural mechanisms and future experimental discoveries.
