Story: Jesus Changes Water to Wine

Category: New Testament
 Scriptures: John 2:1-2:11

 Commentary

The wedding miracle in Cana was the first time Jesus revealed His supernatural abilities in public. This first miracle teaches us tht Jesus can provide for our needs.  Although we don't always get what we want, but when we turn to the Lord, our needs are met.

An important lesson for us is to pay less attention to the wine and instead, give our attention to the winemaker.  The guests of the wedding never learned about the 'Winemaker' because of their concentration on the wine, Focusing on the wrong things is something many of us do, leading us to take our focus from the Lord.

The purpose of this miracle was explained further in John 2:11: “This, the first of His signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee and manifested His glory. And His disciples believed in Him.” Miracles, or signs, are not all that God wants us to believe in, but ratheer, we must believe in Him and share that belief with others. Rather than providing us our fill of wine, (or any other physical needs), the Lord's plan is to show His love to us, leading us to trust in Him.

During the wedding feast, none of the guests made the wine. No one picked grapes, or trampled them, and no one strained them out. In the end, the guests relied on the Messiah to provide for them without even realizing it.Today we often behave in the same way, expecting that God will provide for us without our having to do anything in return. Despite our abuse of His gift, Jesus still continues to gives.

John 2:1-2:11

1 The third day, there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there.

2 Jesus also was invited, with his disciples, to the marriage.

3 When the wine ran out, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no wine.”

4 Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does that have to do with you and me? My hour has not yet come.”

5 His mother said to the servants, “Whatever he says to you, do it.”

6 Now there were six water pots of stone set there after the Jews’ way of purifying, containing two or three metretes apiece.

7 Jesus said to them, “Fill the water pots with water.” They filled them up to the brim.

8 He said to them, “Now draw some out, and take it to the ruler of the feast.” So they took it.

9 When the ruler of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and didn’t know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the ruler of the feast called the bridegroom,

10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when the guests have drunk freely, then that which is worse. You have kept the good wine until now!”

11 This beginning of his signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
