Psalm 22:18 states that the sufferer's garments are divided and lots are cast for his clothing. In its original setting this forms part of the humiliation of a righteous sufferer whose enemies treat his possessions as though he were already dead.

John 19:23-24 records that the soldiers divided Jesus' outer garments and then cast lots for His seamless tunic. John explicitly states that this happened so that Scripture would be fulfilled and quotes Psalm 22:18. This is therefore one of the clearest direct fulfillment statements in the passion narratives. An apparently minor action by Roman soldiers corresponds precisely to the psalm and becomes part of John's presentation of Jesus' death as occurring according to Scripture.
