Psalm 22:8 places a taunt in the mouths of the sufferer's enemies: because he trusts in the LORD, they mockingly challenge God to rescue him if God truly delights in him. The taunt attacks both the sufferer's faith and his claimed relationship with God.

Matthew 27:43 records the religious leaders using remarkably similar words about Jesus: "He trusted in God; let God deliver him now, if he desires him." The correspondence is so close that Matthew clearly presents the crucifixion scene in the language of Psalm 22. The mockers unknowingly reenact the psalm's portrayal of the righteous sufferer, while the resurrection ultimately demonstrates that Jesus' trust in the Father was not misplaced even though He was not delivered from the cross itself.
