Psalm 22:7 portrays the suffering righteous man as an object of public contempt. Those who see him mock, sneer, and shake their heads. The imagery communicates not only physical suffering but humiliation before hostile spectators.

The Gospel accounts deliberately echo this language at Jesus' crucifixion. Matthew 27:39-44 describes passersby wagging their heads and mocking Jesus, while religious leaders and the crucified criminals also deride Him. The verbal and situational correspondence is striking. The experience David described becomes a pattern fulfilled with heightened intensity at Calvary, where the Messiah is publicly ridiculed precisely while enduring the suffering through which Christians believe He accomplishes salvation.
