In 2 Samuel 7:13 God promises that the throne of David's descendant will be established forever. Solomon is clearly involved in the immediate fulfillment, for he would build the temple for God's name. Yet Solomon's own reign was temporary, and the kingdoms of his earthly successors eventually came to an end. The language of an everlasting throne therefore caused the promise to reach beyond any single ordinary Davidic king and became a central foundation of Israel's messianic hope.
Second Peter 1:11 speaks of the "eternal kingdom" of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The New Testament repeatedly identifies Jesus as David's royal heir and describes His reign as everlasting. Luke 1:32-33 makes the connection particularly explicit by declaring that God will give Jesus the throne of His father David and that His kingdom will have no end. Christians therefore understand the permanent kingdom promised in the Davidic covenant as ultimately fulfilled in Christ, whose reign is not terminated by death and whose royal authority endures forever.
