First Samuel 2:35 comes within God's judgment upon the house of Eli because of the corruption of Eli's sons. In contrast to their unfaithfulness, God promises to raise up a faithful priest who will act according to His heart and mind. Historically, the prophecy has an immediate horizon within Israel's priesthood, commonly associated with Samuel's faithful service and especially with the replacement of Eli's priestly line by Zadok under Solomon. The passage therefore should not be treated as though its only possible reference were directly to Jesus.

Christian interpretation nevertheless sees the faithful priesthood described here reaching its fullest realization in Christ. Hebrews 2:17 calls Jesus a merciful and faithful High Priest; Hebrews 3:1-3 emphasizes His faithfulness to the One who appointed Him; and Hebrews 7:24-25 declares that His priesthood is permanent because He lives forever. The temporary and imperfect priesthoods of Israel ultimately give way to the perfect mediation of Christ. Thus the historical promise of a faithful priest provides a pattern that finds its complete and enduring expression in Jesus, whose priesthood never fails and whose intercession for His people continues forever.
