Daniel 9:26 places the cutting off of the Anointed One before the prophecy's statement that the city and sanctuary will be destroyed by the people of a coming ruler. On the traditional Christian identification of the Anointed One with Jesus, this establishes an important historical sequence: Messiah's death precedes the destruction of Jerusalem and its Temple.

Matthew 27:50-51 records Jesus' death and the tearing of the Temple curtain, while the Second Temple itself continued to stand until its destruction by Roman forces in A.D. 70. Jesus' crucifixion therefore occurred decades before that destruction, fitting the sequence described in Daniel 9:26. The interpretation of all details of Daniel's seventy weeks remains debated, but this particular chronological correspondence is one of the major reasons Christian interpreters have historically understood the passage messianically.
