Daniel 9:25 states that from the issuing of a word to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until an anointed one, a prince, there will be a specified period of "sevens." This is one of the principal chronological statements in Daniel's seventy-weeks prophecy, and its starting point, division of the sevens, and precise historical calculation have been interpreted in several ways by conservative as well as other scholars.

John 12:12-13 records Jesus' public entry into Jerusalem amid messianic acclamation: the crowd welcomes Him with "Hosanna" and calls Him the King of Israel. Many Christian interpreters have connected Daniel 9:25's appearance of the Anointed Prince with Jesus' manifestation as Messiah, sometimes specifically with the triumphal entry. The connection is historically important and compatible with a messianic reading of Daniel, but Scripture itself does not explicitly state that John 12 is the exact terminus of Daniel's chronological calculation. The explanation should therefore affirm the messianic correspondence without presenting one disputed chronology as though the text itself settled every calculation.
